A Zimbabwean farmer who solar-dries her harvest — and has trained 1,000 others — is named a global food hero

In Murewa District, Zimbabwe, Pelegrinah Musingwini turns sunshine into shelf life: she solar-dries fruits, vegetables and traditional foods so harvests that might rot instead become higher-value products families can sell and store. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization has now named her one of its 100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems, chosen from 609 nominations across 131 countries for the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026. As a certified Trainer of Trainers, she has already equipped more than 1,000 farmers — mainly women and young people — in preservation and small-scale agribusiness. Her harvest keeps; so does her knowledge, because she passes it on.

The upbeat factorone farmer's solar dryer became a school for a thousand others.
