Across Southeast Asia, the death penalty is quietly losing ground
A new Amnesty International briefing, 'Changing Tides,' finds the region moving — unevenly but unmistakably — toward ending executions. Three states (Cambodia, the Philippines and Timor-Leste) have abolished the penalty in law; Indonesia has gone a decade without an execution; and Malaysia and Thailand look close to the same. Only Myanmar, Singapore and Viet Nam have carried out executions in the past five years. The briefing marks the 23rd World Day Against the Death Penalty.
