Africa's biggest refinery bet broke ground in Lamu
Ground broke this week in Lamu, Kenya, on the $16 billion Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery and petrochemicals complex — designed to process 700,000 barrels of crude a day and delivered within 40 months. The groundbreaking drew a remarkable roll call: President Ruto, Aliko Dangote, Ethiopia's Abiy Ahmed, Uganda's Museveni, former president Obasanjo among them. Thirty percent of the equity is being offered to East African countries; qualified Lamu graduates get jobs; and more than 1,000 young people from the county will be trained. Ruto projects 60,000 jobs in all.
