Africa's largest solar plant is on its way: a 1.2-gigawatt field of panels rising in Egypt's Minya desert
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is arranging up to $265 million in loans toward a solar plant and battery-storage facility in Minya, Egypt, that at 1.2 gigawatts will be the largest solar installation in Egypt and in Africa. The EBRD money — its own loan, funds mobilised from Bank of Jordan, and concessional finance from the Clean Technology Fund — anchors a wider debt package of up to $566 million with German, Dutch and French development lenders, for a project owned by Infinity Power and HAU Energy. Batteries mean the desert sun can keep working after dark, storing power for the evening hours when Egypt needs it most.
