African researchers take the lead on climate and health

Ten research institutions across Eastern and Southern Africa have joined a five-year programme to build African-led evidence on how a warming climate affects health — and what to do about it. Led by the ARCH regional hub and backed by Canada's IDRC and the UK's FCDO, the work focuses on early-warning systems, climate-sensitive diseases, health-worker capacity and the economics of adaptation. Project lead Dr Martin Muchangi says the evidence guiding the response must be grounded in the region's own realities — research designed where the impacts land, aimed at stronger primary care and health systems that can weather a changing climate.
