After 26 years, one woman's stand against a noisy factory ends in vindication

Peirisge Mary Margaret Fernando filed her case in December 2000, saying the noise and vibrations from St Regis Packaging's factory in Kochchikade were cracking the walls and sinking the floors of her home. Engineers and neighbours testified; the company denied everything. On October 1, 2026, Sri Lanka's Supreme Court upheld the lower courts' finding that she had proved her claim under the old Roman-law principle of Aquilian liability — and kept her Rs. 1,200,000 (about $3,600) award intact.
