AI that speaks Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo: UNDP and GSMA deepen Africa's push for homegrown language technology
UNDP and the GSMA have teamed up to help African innovators turn homegrown AI pilots into services people actually use — with AI that speaks African languages at the heart of it. The partnership pairs GSMA's mobile-industry networks with UNDP's timbuktoo initiative, giving developers access to computing power, expertise and real-world deployment routes. Nigeria is already ahead: its open-source N-ATLAS model, built with local firm Awarri, understands Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo and Nigerian-accented English, and the government opened a National AI Innovation Challenge in September to turn it into practical apps. The message from UNDP's Aissata De: connect African innovators to the infrastructure, skills and opportunities they need to scale.
