Algeria just switched on a 300-megawatt solar plant — the country's largest, built across 600 hectares of desert light

Energy Minister Mourad Adjal has opened Algeria's largest photovoltaic solar plant, in El Oued province: 300 megawatts of capacity spread over 600 hectares and 69 solar sub-fields holding 650,000 panels. It is the third plant of its kind commissioned this year, after Tendla and El Ghrous at 200 megawatts each, and part of a national programme aiming for 15,000 megawatts of solar capacity by 2035. The facility took 22 months to build. For a country whose wealth was built on oil and gas, each new field of panels is a deliberate turn toward the resource Algeria has in greatest abundance — sunlight.
