Almost 13 gigawatts of wind and sun: South Australia picks the projects for its next leap

South Australia already runs on sunshine and wind more than almost anywhere on Earth — renewables supplied 77% of its electricity in 2025, and the state aims for 100% net renewables by the end of 2027. Now it has chosen the next wave: four project proposals totalling almost 13 gigawatts of wind and solar in the Whyalla West area, on the Eyre Peninsula. Windlab leads with up to 6 gigawatts, followed by Altra Energy (4.7 gigawatts), Heron Energy (1.6 gigawatts of wind) and Neoen (360 megawatts of solar). The developers now earn the exclusive right to study their sites in detail — the careful, unglamorous step that decides which of these giants actually get built in the early 2030s.

The upbeat factora state at 77% renewables just sketched the pipeline to finish the job — and then some.
