Almost two extra years: a three-drug combination proves itself in prostate cancer
The PEACE-1 trial followed 1,173 men whose prostate cancer had already spread at diagnosis, for a median of nearly eight years — long enough to answer the only question that matters. Adding the hormone drug abiraterone to standard treatment cut the risk of death by a quarter overall; among men receiving the full triplet with chemotherapy, the risk fell by a third, and median survival reached 6.2 years against 4.4. Eight years after starting, 40.3% of men on the triplet were alive, versus 27.1% on standard care. Karim Fizazi of Lille presented the mature data at ESMO.
The upbeat factornearly two more years of life, proven over eight years of watching — not a promise, a measurement.
