At 99, former nurse Helga Duffy stood on top of a flying plane — and took the world record
Helga Duffy had a simple motto ready when she landed: 'Try anything. Don't ever say, I can't do it.' At 99 years and 21 days, the former nurse was strapped to the top wing of a small plane at Rendcomb Airfield in Gloucestershire and flown for more than five minutes — making her the world's oldest female wing-walker, a record confirmed by a Guinness adjudicator waiting on the ground. 'Once we were up a thousand metres, I took three deep breaths; the air up there is so pure you wouldn't believe it,' she said. She did it to raise money for her regional air ambulance, bringing in over £1,600 (about $2,200) — and the previous record-holder, 97-year-old Betty Bromage, is already joking she will take the title back at 100.
