At 99, she strapped herself to a wing — and flew for the air ambulance

Helga Duffy saw a 97-year-old do it on the news and decided her turn had come. At RFC Rendcomb Airfield in Gloucestershire, the 99-year-old — 99 years and 21 days, precisely — was strapped to the top wing of a small plane and flown through the sky, taking the Guinness World Records title for the oldest female wing-walker while a Guinness adjudicator watched. She lives in a care home in Devizes, said she was too excited to be frightened, and raised more than £1,300 (about $1,770) for the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance — the service that once carried her late sister-in-law. Her rival Betty Bromage, 97, has cheerfully vowed to win the title back at 100.

The upbeat factorat 99, she did not just defy gravity — she turned the flight into help for strangers.
