At a women's football match in Lima, UNESCO Peru kicked off a campaign to get communities ready for El Niño

UNESCO Peru chose a joyful stage for a serious message: a women's friendly football match between Alianza Lima and Argentina's Talleres de Córdoba at Alejandro Villanueva Stadium in Lima. There it launched Comunidades PRO — Prepared, Resilient and Organized Communities — a campaign helping neighbourhoods get ready for the 2026–2027 El Niño, the climate pattern that can bring heavy rain and flooding to Peru's coast. The programme weaves together education, science and culture: schools will co-design a play-based toolkit so children learn preparedness by doing, and officials are working with Peru's Ministry of Culture and civil defence agency INDECI to protect cultural heritage and help municipalities plan ahead, before the rains arrive.

The upbeat factorpreparedness arrived with a football crowd's energy — a whole community rehearsing resilience before it needs it.
