At Accra's new learning farm, students learn vegetables by growing them

Theory only goes so far when the subject is a tomato. On October 20, the East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer Foundation opened a learning farm at the University of Ghana in Accra, where students and local farmers can practise the whole craft hands-on — choosing crops, preparing land, raising seedlings, mulching, saving water and outsmarting pests — and learn the business side too, what a crop costs and what it can earn. Country director Jemima Djah says the Accra site brings training within reach of partners who once had to travel to the middle of the country. The foundation has trained more than 30,000 farmers since 2023 and plans another learning farm in Ghana's Upper East Region.

The upbeat factormuddy boots over textbooks — 30,000 farmers trained, and now a classroom that is itself a farm.
