At five years old, Ziggy Smith just surfed a national championship — breaking his dad's record

Jeffreys Bay is no paddling pool, and the South African Junior Championships are no small stage. Ziggy Smith, five years old and a pupil at Llandudno Primary, surfed them anyway — becoming the youngest competitor in the event's history, a record previously held by his father, pro surfer Jordy Smith, at age seven. With his dad in the water as his caddie, Ziggy took third place in the Under-10 division against children nearly twice his age, a week after finishing second in the Super Groms at Victoria Bay. Some family records are made to be broken — preferably by your own kid, at five.

The upbeat factorthe youngest surfer in championship history, cheered on by the man whose record he just took — his dad.
