Australia's first new steel mill in 35 years will run on sunshine and wind from day one
Collie, in Western Australia, built its name on coal. Its next chapter looks very different. Generation Steel — a company formerly known as Green Steel of WA — has signed a binding agreement with mining giant BHP to power its proposed Collie steel mill entirely with renewable electricity, drawn from solar and wind farms that are already operating. The plant will recycle scrap steel into new steel, and it would be the first new steel mill built anywhere in Australia in more than 35 years — with one of the lowest-emissions setups in the world as the aim. Co-founder Rajan Aggarwal called being powered entirely by renewables from day one "a defining moment", while BHP's Rob Whitham said the deal turns surplus clean energy into an opportunity for the wider community and economy. The mill is still a proposal, with more details to come — but its power supply is now locked in.
