Australia's rooftops just outshone themselves — again: solar hits a record 17,488 megawatts
At noon on Sunday, rooftop solar panels on Australian homes and businesses were generating 17,488 megawatts — a new all-time high for the national grid, and the fourth regional record to fall in five days. At that moment, solar in all its forms was supplying a record 72.29% of the grid's demand. In South Australia, renewables covered 96.3% of the state's electricity use at the peak. Ordinary rooftops, quietly doing the heavy lifting.
The upbeat factormillions of ordinary roofs just powered nearly three-quarters of a continent-sized grid.
