Bacteria that brew plastics and cosmetics without oil

Nearly everything — plastics, medicines, lipstick — starts as fossil fuel. Berlin's Charité-led CarboNcare project is reprogramming bacteria to make the same chemical building blocks from methanol, itself made from captured CO2: tiny living factories that could unhook the chemical industry from oil.
