Bangladesh signs a $450 million World Bank deal to make its banks safer

Bangladesh has signed a $450 million financing agreement with the World Bank's International Development Association for its Financial Sector Support Project II, signed in Dhaka by Economic Relations Division Secretary Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky and World Bank Division Director Jean Pesme. Running from July 2026 to June 2031 and implemented by Bangladesh Bank, the project strengthens the financial safety net, sharpens supervision and supports banking-sector restructuring, on a 25-year loan with a five-year grace period. It is backstage work — the kind that decides whether ordinary savers' money is safe when a bank wobbles.
