Bangladesh talks iodine — the tiny nutrient that helps young minds grow

In Dhaka, health leaders, salt producers and nutrition experts gathered for World Iodine Day with a simple message: a pinch of the right salt protects growing brains. Iodine is a nutrient the body needs in tiny amounts, and without it, children's learning and development can suffer. State Minister for Health Dr MA Muhit told the meeting that 12% of Bangladesh's population still has iodine deficiency, and called for universal use of iodised salt — ordinary table salt with iodine added. The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation, which supports small salt producers, was urged to help more of them make quality iodised salt and to spread the word to families.

The upbeat factorone of the cheapest brain protectors in the world fits in a salt shaker — and Bangladesh is pushing it to every table.
