Beyond comparison: the giant earthworm of the Western Ghats
Deep in the forests of the Western Ghats, researchers from the Zoological Survey of India and Mahatma Gandhi University dug up an earthworm so unusual they named it Drawida incomparabilis — 'beyond comparison.' At up to 39 centimeters long, it dwarfs its cousins, with a unique internal anatomy. On the same expedition the team re-found Drawida loricata, a rare earthworm unseen in scientific records for 81 years. Proof that Earth's most extraordinary creatures are often right under our feet.
The upbeat factor81 years lost, and one worm that has no equal.
