Boston's basketball owners just gave its children's hospital more than $200 million

It started with one family's gift. Last December, Celtics co-owner Rob Hale and his wife Karen gave $100 million to help build Boston Children's Hospital a new campus for children in mental-health crisis. This week the rest of the team's two dozen owners matched it, taking the total past $200 million — the largest single gift in the hospital's history. The money will build the Brighton behavioral-health campus, fund research into new treatments for childhood diseases, train pediatric nurses, seed an innovation fund and expand programs that wrap around whole families. 'Its significance will ultimately be measured not by the record it sets, but by the lives it will save,' said hospital CEO Dr. Kevin Churchwell.

The upbeat factorone family's generosity pulled two dozen more givers in behind it — for children at their most vulnerable.
