Brazil eliminated mother-to-child HIV transmission — the biggest country ever to do it
At a ceremony during the 63rd PAHO Directing Council, Brazil was recognized for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV — validated in December 2025, it is the world’s most populous country to reach the milestone. The Bahamas was certified in April 2026, and the Turks and Caicos Islands, certified in June, also became the first territory in the Americas to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B.
