Brazil's overlooked savannah just won the UN's top prize for bringing nature back
Everyone thinks of the Amazon when they hear 'Brazil,' but the country's Cerrado savannah is the richest grassland on Earth — and half of it has been cleared for farms. The Araticum Initiative, a coalition of more than 180 organizations, indigenous peoples, farmers, researchers, and government institutions across 9 Brazilian states, is reversing that loss, working to restore 4.4 million acres to native savannah. The effort just earned the United Nations' World Restoration Flagship award, one of only three given worldwide, and teams have already mapped more than 50,000 acres under restoration.
The upbeat factora forgotten savannah, 180 allies, and the UN's highest honor for healing land.
