Brazil votes 75–1 to end the six-day week: 40 hours, two days of rest, no pay cut

On 14 October, Brazil's Senate voted 75 to 1 — twice in one day — to amend the constitution and end the '6x1' schedule, six days of work for one day of rest, that has shaped life for millions of Brazilian workers. The maximum week falls from 44 hours to 40, every worker gains two paid days of rest a week, and the amendment forbids any cut in pay for the shorter hours. The change phases in over about 14 months, starting with a 42-hour limit and the two rest days two months after the amendment is formally promulgated. The text had already passed the Chamber of Deputies in May, so no presidential signature is needed.

The upbeat factora whole country just voted itself a second day of rest — every week, without losing a cent of pay.
