Breast milk is a living, tunable system — and 2,000 samples just proved it

Mother's milk is not a fixed recipe. Two new papers in the journal Science, from a 20-researcher team across six countries led by the University of Manitoba, analyzed nearly 2,000 milk samples from more than 1,000 mother-and-baby pairs in Canada, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, and Pakistan, measuring 25,000 different compounds. They found that some ingredients — B vitamins, selenium, and the profile of fats — shift clearly with the supplements a mother takes, while other parts stay constant no matter what; a second study showed milk also reveals how well the mother's own body is doing its job, linked to how the baby grows. The practical upshot, says consortium director Dr. Meghan Azad: nutrition support given after birth — not just during pregnancy — could improve what breastfed babies receive, especially where mothers are undernourished.

The upbeat factorAwe: a mother's body, quietly engineering the perfect first food.
