C$64 million (about US$46 million) of breathing room: 130,000 seniors to receive up to $500

Help, addressed to the people who feel prices most. More than 130,000 seniors in Newfoundland and Labrador will receive a one-time Seniors Affordability Payment of up to $500 — C$64 million (about US$46 million) in total — announced Monday by Premier Tony Wakeham and Finance and Seniors Minister Craig Pardy. Seniors with income up to $75,000 receive the full $500 (about US$355); those earning between $75,000 and $100,000 receive a payment scaled to income. Payments are expected to begin before the end of 2026, issued by cheque using tax-return information. The payment sits within more than $340 million of affordability measures the province has put in place, including an electricity rebate and a doubled home-heating supplement.

The upbeat factora cheque that simply arrives — no application maze — for 130,000 older neighbours.
