Canada honours six champions carrying the Persons Case legacy forward

In 1929, Canada's Persons Case established that women are 'persons' under the law — a ruling five determined women fought for. This week in Ottawa, Minister Rechie Valdez announced the 2026 Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case, honouring six people carrying that legacy into today's fights for equality: Amanda Kilabuk, Penney Kome, Sunny Marriner, Dr Amanda McCormick, Melanie Omeniho and youth recipient Yanique Brandford. The ceremony came just after Persons Day and during Women and Gender Equality Canada's 50th anniversary year.

The upbeat factorninety-seven years after women became 'persons' in law, the work is honoured in new hands.
