Canada leads a $2.4 million (about $1.7 million) rescue for three endangered butterflies

Three of Canada's rarest butterflies — the Mottled Duskywing, the Frosted Elfin and the very rare Curiously Isolated Hairstreak — are getting a coordinated second chance. The University of Guelph is leading a national project, funded by a C$2.4 million (about $1.7 million) NSERC Alliance–Society grant, bringing together the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory, Wildlife Preservation Canada, the Wilder Institute at the Calgary Zoo, Parks Canada and Ontario Parks. Building on a successful Ontario reintroduction, ecologist Dr Ryan Norris's team will reintroduce the three species and build what researchers believe is Canada's first multi-species framework for insect conservation — a rescue plan other insects can follow.

The upbeat factorthree butterflies on the brink get a national rescue team — and a playbook for saving the next species too.
