Canada opens a $750 million fund to grow fruit and vegetables all year round

Canada has launched a seven-year, $750 million programme to help growers produce fruit and vegetables at home through the whole year — including through Canadian winters. The Controlled Environment Agriculture Growth Pathway Program, announced in Ottawa on 30 October, offers grants of $100,000 to $10 million for technology-led growing — greenhouses and indoor farms that control light, heat and water. Of the total, $650 million supports technology adoption and $100 million is reserved for rural and northern community solutions, where fresh produce travels furthest and costs most. The fund does not put a single extra pepper on shelves yet — projects must be approved first — but it is a serious bet that food security can be grown, not just imported.
