Canada puts $20 million behind the food banks and community kitchens feeding its neighbours

In Toronto, at Second Harvest's warehouse, the federal government named the first two distributors of a new food-security fund — and the money is meant to end up on family tables. Food Banks Canada and Second Harvest will each receive up to $10 million from the Local Food Infrastructure Fund's Community Support Stream, and will pass it through to local food banks and non-profit community organisations to acquire and distribute food. The fund sits inside Canada's first-ever National Food Security Strategy, backed by $3.2 billion over 10 years, aimed at the root causes of hunger and at helping the most vulnerable Canadians access nutritious food close to home.

The upbeat factor$20 million is on its way from a national strategy to the neighbourhood food bank that knows its families by name.
