Catherine Breed just became the first person to swim California's entire 900-mile coast
Catherine Breed, 33, set out from the California-Oregon border on July 1 with a support sailboat, a dinghy and a steady front crawl. One hundred and eleven days later she reached the maritime boundary with Mexico — the first person ever to swim California's whole 900-mile (1,448 km) coastline. She averaged about 10.3 miles a day, swam up to five hours at a stretch, ate more than 6,000 calories daily, and was pulled from the water more than once when sharks were spotted. She did it, she says, to tell the story of how the ocean changed her life — and to ask people to protect this coastline.
The upbeat factor900 miles, 111 days, one unbroken line of coastline — swum.
