Chicagoans kayaked their river at sunset — on a floating park that did not exist a decade ago

On a warm October evening, Chicago's Metropolitan Water Reclamation District and the nonprofit Urban Rivers invited the community to kayak the Wild Mile — a stretch of the North Branch Canal transformed with floating gardens and walkways into the world's first floating eco-park of its kind. Paddlers celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month saw the point of it all at water level: a once-industrial channel now clean and alive enough to teach from, fish beside and drift through at sunset. 'What better way to connect with nature,' said Commissioner Marcelino Garcia, 'than to kayak along the Wild Mile?'

The upbeat factora working river, reclaimed as a place to play and learn.
