Chile wipes out dog-transmitted rabies — a first for South America
The Pan American Health Organization announced that Chile has been validated for eliminating dog-transmitted rabies — the first country in South America to do so. It's one of several milestones PAHO recognized this week: Brazil was validated for ending mother-to-child transmission of HIV, El Salvador for eliminating trachoma, and the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos for ending mother-to-child HIV and hepatitis B transmission. Each milestone took years of vaccinations, testing and follow-up.
