China's wind and solar capacity passes 2 terawatts — and supplied most of its new electricity growth
China's combined wind and solar power capacity has passed 2 billion kilowatts (2 terawatts), the National Energy Administration reports — a milestone in sheer building scale. The generation behind the capacity is what matters most: from January to September, wind and solar farms produced 1.93 trillion kilowatt-hours, up 193.7 billion kilowatt-hours on the same period last year, and that increase alone covered 64% of the country's total growth in electricity use. At the peak of summer demand, midday wind and solar output supplied more than 40% of the national load on the highest-demand days, helping keep the lights on through the heat. Every one of those kilowatt-hours is electricity that did not need coal or gas to be burned at the moment it was used.
