Cities just gained a new key to climate money: UN-Habitat joins the Green Climate Fund's trusted circle
The Green Climate Fund — the world's largest dedicated climate fund — has confirmed UN-Habitat, the UN agency for cities, as an Accredited Entity, at its board meeting in Incheon, South Korea. Accreditation sounds like paperwork; in practice it is a key. It means UN-Habitat can now help governments turn the urban priorities in their climate plans — flood-safe neighbourhoods, cooler streets, resilient water and housing — into fundable projects, especially in developing countries where mayors have plans but not capital. 'This partnership creates new opportunities to expand investment in climate-resilient cities, settlements and essential urban services,' said the Fund's Achala Abeysinghe. UN-Habitat's Anacláudia Rossbach said the agency will now work with national and local partners to build the proposals.
