College comes to the Eastern Shore prison: a $60,000 grant grows a 25-year-old classroom

For more than 25 years, Salisbury University volunteers have travelled to Maryland's Eastern Correctional Institution to read philosophy, write creatively and debate in Ethics Bowl with incarcerated learners — every semester, even through the pandemic, by email. Now a $60,000 grant from the University System of Maryland, part of $400,000 awarded to nine Maryland institutions, will help turn that volunteer tradition into expanded higher-education opportunities through the university's PHILoS initiative, led by philosophy professor Dr Timothy Stock. 'These are some of the best conversations I've ever had,' Stock says.

The upbeat factora classroom that refused to disappear for 25 years just earned the chance to grow.
