Deep-sea scientists got the surprise of their lives — a Dumbo octopus
Researchers from the Ocean Exploration Trust and NOAA were exploring an unnamed seamount near the Palau Marine Sanctuary when the cutest deep-sea creature on Earth bopped into view: a Dumbo octopus, named for the ear-like fins that make it look like a certain flying elephant. The scientists had been saying — half-jokingly — that they hoped to see one on this dive. 'I'm shaking,' one of them can be heard saying as it drifts past the camera. Dumbo octopuses live deeper than almost any other octopus — some have been recorded more than 4,000 meters down — so every sighting is a gift.
The upbeat factorjoy so pure it made a deep-sea scientist tremble.
