Dominica's students beat the regional average in 30 of 32 subjects — and were celebrated for far more than exams
At Dominica's National School Awards, the numbers told one story: the island's students scored 11.3% above the regional average in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations, beating the benchmark in 30 of 32 subjects, with pass rates of 88.4% in English and 94.9% in mathematics. The ceremony told a wider one, honouring 42 students and schools for agriculture, performing arts, modern languages, community service, innovation and cultural preservation as well as grades. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit used the night to argue for classrooms that teach thinking over memorising — preparation, he said, for an age of artificial intelligence.
The upbeat factora small island outscoring its region — and defining achievement broadly enough to include service, art and culture.
