Earrings you could hula-hoop through: a 16.5-kilo gold pair takes two world records

In Dubai's Gold District, jeweller Joyalukkas unveiled the Mayura Sahasra — 'A Thousand Peacocks' — a handcrafted pair of 22-carat gold jhumka earrings weighing 16.514 kilograms, more than five times the previous record. The pair, 1.215 metres long, was certified by Guinness World Records as both the world's heaviest and the world's largest pair of gold earrings. Fifty-five master artisans spent 5,840 hours building them, feather by golden feather, in homage to the peacock. Nobody is expected to wear them. That is rather the point.

The upbeat factor55 artisans, 5,840 hours, and earrings that need their own security detail — pure, gleaming delight.
