Eight women scientists honoured in Mexico — and a new door opens for girls behind them

Mexico City's Museum of Natural History hosted a celebration two decades in the making. Eight researchers received the 2026 'For Women in Science' awards, led by L'Oréal Groupe México, UNESCO and the Mexican Academy of Sciences, recognising work across medicine, astronomy, biotechnology, environmental science and sustainable materials. More than MXN 1.55 million (about $80,000) was invested in this year's awards to strengthen the recipients' research. And the evening looked forward as well as back: organisers announced that the international 'For Girls in Science' programme will launch in Mexico, giving girls role models, mentorship and a first foothold in scientific careers.

The upbeat factoreight women honoured for their science — and a mentorship door opened for the girls watching.
