Europe backs 77 net-zero projects with €3.4 billion (about $4 billion)

The European Commission has chosen 77 net-zero technology projects across 23 European countries to share €3.4 billion (about $4 billion) from the EU Innovation Fund — money raised from carbon-market revenues, so polluters' payments end up funding the alternatives. The projects span renewable energy, storage, clean manufacturing, alternative fuels and carbon management, and for the first time include a small modular reactor and a direct-air carbon capture project. Together they are estimated to avoid about 290 million tonnes of CO2 over their first decade — roughly a tonne every second.

The upbeat factorcarbon money is being turned, tonne by tonne, into the technology that replaces it.
