Every baby in Barbados now starts life protected: the island has eliminated mother-to-child HIV transmission

Barbados has been officially certified by the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization as having eliminated mother-to-child transmission of HIV — meaning babies are no longer born with the virus there. Health workers tested and cared for pregnant and breastfeeding women across the island's clinics, and community groups and people living with HIV helped keep mothers connected to treatment. Barbados becomes the 15th country or territory in the Americas to reach this milestone, out of just 23 worldwide.

The upbeat factora whole generation of Barbadian babies now begins life free of a virus their mothers' generation fought to contain.
