First patient dosed in a trial aiming to change the course of Parkinson's, not just ease it

At Royal Liverpool University Hospital, the first person with Parkinson's has received MTX325, an experimental pill designed to help cells clear out faulty mitochondria — the worn-out power stations thought to drive the disease. Current Parkinson's medicines mainly ease symptoms; this phase 1b study, run by Cambridge-based Mission Therapeutics across the UK, Europe and Australia, will check safety and whether the drug engages its target in 36 people with mild to moderate Parkinson's. It is an early step, honestly labelled — but it is the step every disease-changing treatment must take.

The upbeat factora first patient, a new idea about why Parkinson's progresses, and a careful trial to test it.
