For every mother whose pregnancy turns dangerous: a global rescue plan for pre-eclampsia launches
The World Health Organization launched a Global Roadmap for Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy (2026–2035) at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Global Conference, aiming to end preventable deaths from pre-eclampsia and eclampsia — dangerous complications involving high blood pressure, organ damage or seizures. The conditions complicate an estimated 10–15% of pregnancies and cause about 42,000 maternal deaths and more than 500,000 stillbirths and newborn deaths a year — survival often coming down to whether blood pressure was checked in time and emergency care was within reach. The roadmap coordinates research, medicines, guidance, health systems and political action, focused on the low- and middle-income countries bearing the heaviest burden.
