For the first time, people with type 1 diabetes and kidney disease are included in an islet transplant trial

Islet cell transplantation — giving a person insulin-making cells so their body can manage blood sugar again — has long excluded people who also have chronic kidney disease, because standard anti-rejection medicines can harm kidneys. A trial funded by the charity Breakthrough T1D has now transplanted its first participant with both conditions, pairing the cells with an investigational medicine, tegoprubart, designed to be gentler. Nearly one in three people with type 1 diabetes develops kidney disease; opening this research to them is, in the charity's words, 'a next step toward durable and scalable cures.'

The upbeat factorthe patients who need it most are no longer left out of the trial.
