Four goals, one piece of history: Kenya's Junior Starlets become the first Kenyan team ever to reach a World Cup knockout round

Kenya's under-17 girls needed to win big, and they knew the exact number: beat Samoa by four goals in Rabat and goal difference would carry them into the World Cup's knockout rounds. They did it precisely — 4-0, with two goals from Mwanakombo Bakari and one each from Brenda Awuor and Gaudencia Maloba — edging past Chile and Australia as one of the best third-placed teams. The result makes the Junior Starlets the first Kenyan team, at any level, ever to qualify for the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup. Head coach Mildred Cheche had set the squad a target of the last sixteen; her players delivered it to the goal. A Round of 16 tie against Japan is next, and whatever happens there, the barrier is broken: a generation of Kenyan girls has now watched a Kenyan team survive a World Cup group — wearing their own colours, playing their own age group, making their own history.

The upbeat factorthe exact four-goal win they needed, delivered — and a first in Kenyan football history, made by its teenage girls.
