Four towns in Benin are getting the country's first privately built solar plants — €30 million (about $33.5 million) is now signed

Benin's first privately developed solar project just locked in its money. The International Finance Corporation and France's Proparco will provide €30 million (about $33.5 million) toward four solar plants — at Natitingou, Djougou, Parakou and Bohicon — with a combined capacity of 62 megawatts and a total cost of €45 million (about $53 million). Built by the Axian group, the plants should generate about 110 gigawatt-hours a year from early 2028, lifting the country's home-grown power generation by around 17%. Benin's national compact aims to connect about 928,000 more households by 2030.
