From a 10-megawatt pilot to 100: Europe's renewable hydrogen plant gets its roof
At Shell's Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland in Germany, construction crews have put the roof on REFHYNE 2 — a 100-megawatt electrolyser that will split water with renewable electricity to make up to 44 tonnes of green hydrogen a day. It is a tenfold scale-up from the site's 10-megawatt pilot, and after 16 months of construction it is on track to start operating in 2027. The EU-backed project is one of Europe's largest renewable hydrogen plants — industrial plumbing for a fuel that burns back into water.
