Germany put half a million new batteries to work in nine months — saving sunshine for after dark
Batteries are quietly becoming Germany's favourite way to keep the lights steady. More than 500,000 new storage systems were installed in the first nine months of 2026, adding about 8.2 gigawatt-hours of capacity — enough to hold a small city's evening electricity — according to the German Solar Association (BSW-Solar), which analysed the national energy market register. That is 91% more new capacity than in the same months last year, and the biggest growth came from large battery parks, whose additions more than quadrupled to about 3.8 gigawatt-hours. Home batteries added 3.2 gigawatt-hours more. Storage matters because it soaks up extra solar and wind power on bright, breezy days and hands it back after sunset. The association expects the full year to pass 10 gigawatt-hours of new capacity.
